Julian graduated from Sydney University with degrees in science and electrical engineering, receiving the University Medal. He worked as a hardware engineer for a telephone company for a couple of years before completing a PhD in signal processing at the University of Cambridge (UK). His postdoctoral work in computer vision took him to the then DSTO in Adelaide and subsequently to the CISRA (Canon) R&D laboratory in Sydney. It was during this time that Julian developed an interest in intellectual property and made the transition to become a patent engineer at CISRA, completing a master's degree in industrial property and qualifying as a patent attorney. After leaving CISRA, Julian spent five years as a patent attorney/associate at Spruson & Ferguson before taking an in-house role in the IP team at ResMed, where he managed patents relating to a range of respiratory technologies. Julian has now been in his current role as patent counsel at Saluda Medical, a neuromodulation technology company, for five and a half years. In this position, he is responsible for the strategic growth and management of Saluda's patent portfolio, as well as advising on a broad range of other IP-related matters
