Elisabeth Opie has a 25+ year career that includes experience as general counsel and company secretary in high-technology, innovation and international environments. In 2014, Elisabeth Opie opened a boutique IP law firm in Munich. Working in partnership with clients to further their long-term success, she provides strategic advice across a broad range of issues facing technology-centric companies in various sectors. Her practice areas include international trade law, technology transfer and commercialisation, competition law and dispute resolution. Solutions-driven and skilled in diplomacy, Elisabeth has extensive experience in formulating and implementing negotiation and licensing strategies that extend through to deal mediation. With deep knowledge and appreciation of innovation ecosystems, her experience also includes engaging with government on IP and trade topics; providing advice on IP policy and core activities within standards bodies; preparing expert legal opinions and amicus curiae briefs in the context of litigation; and representing clients on various IP committees within ETSI, ISO, ITU, ANSI, DVB and IEEE. This experience ranges from IP inception and commercial negotiation through to litigation and policy development. Elisabeth is an accredited CEDR mediator and has experience in mediation and arbitration relating to technology transfer, licensing, cooperative ventures and R&D agreements. As a practising solicitor in Australia and England and Wales, and a practising German lawyer (Rechtsanwältin), she works across both common law and civil law jurisdictions. Elisabeth has received a number of awards in the field of international science cooperation and technology transfer, including a business award for outstanding commercial performance as part of a global team and a strategy excellence award as lead counsel for the restructuring of a major international joint venture. She has appeared in the IAM Patent 1000 and IAM Strategy 300 Global Leaders since 2020 and is recognised as a Notable Practitioner in Managing IP's IP Stars. Elisabeth holds master's degrees in law (IP and international trade) and commercial law, is a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors, and is a Global Research Alliance Fellow.
