With a PhD and post-doctoral research experience in molecular biology and gene therapy, Catherine Winbanks combines deep scientific expertise with more than 12 years' experience advising innovators on complex patent and commercialisation matters. As a principal in Spruson & Ferguson's biotechnology team, she works with universities, research institutes, start-ups and multinational companies on patent strategy, portfolio management and freedom-to-operate issues. Catherine manages international patent portfolios spanning Australia, New Zealand, the United States, Europe and Asia, helping clients protect and commercialise innovations across global markets. Before entering the IP profession, her research focused on gene therapy and novel therapeutic interventions, with work published in leading scientific journals. She has also acted in several high-profile patent opposition proceedings involving CRISPR technology and vaccines.
