Andrew Yen is the chief IP counsel at Panasonic’s R&D division where he is responsible for bilateral licensing, patent pools, global litigations and policy matters relating to standardization, standard essential patents and FRAND. Andrew is instrumental in building Panasonic’s outbound cellular SEP licensing programme and leads a team of licensing and patent professionals to develop technical, legal and valuation positions, including FRAND. He spearheads global licensing negotiations, and his team achieved the first substantive SEP/FRAND decision at the UPC. Andrew represents Panasonic at patent pool formation and licensor meetings. He works with a global in-house team to author Panasonic’s corporate IPR position papers and amicus briefs for standard developing organizations, courts and government agencies worldwide. Prior to joining Panasonic in 2017, Andrew practiced law at Orrick Herrington & Sutcliff, DLA Piper and Hogan Lovells where he represented companies from Asia on patent disputes in the United States courts and the ITC. Andrew is a member of the State Bar of California and is a registered foreign attorney in Japan. He has a multicultural upbringing and speaks English, Mandarin and Japanese. Andrew is currently based in Osaka Japan. He is continuously inspired by the revolutionary spirit of Lexington Massachusetts where he grew up.
